Vernon Davis feels this is the year for the San Francisco 49ers to finally close the deal. In an interview with Pro Football Talk, Davis feels that his team must win a Super Bowl title.
“We must win a Super Bowl title, … You play this game, that’s what you play this game for. You play the game to go to the Super Bowl and that’s the only reason why we play to win and make it to the Super Bowl. So anything short of that would not be acceptable and I think my teammates know that as well.”
The 49ers have been to three consecutive NFC Championship games with a Super Bowl appearance in the middle, however they’ve been unable to win it all. Davis has been in the NFL long enough to know the window of opportunity is only so big before it begins to close.
Talent-wise, the 49ers are still loaded with talent and it makes sense to project them as early-favorites to make another Super Bowl run. However, off-the-field issues could make the upcoming season a tougher one for the 49ers. Star quarterback Colin Kaepernick and wide receiver Quincy Patton are part of an ongoing investigation in a “suspicious” incident involving a woman in a Miami hotel. Pass-rushing star Aldon Smith was arrested April 13 at Los Angeles International Airport and booked on a charge of false report of a bomb threat. Smith has yet to be formally charged in the case, on April 29th he has a court date in Santa Clara County, Calif., on felony gun charges and a drunken driving charge. Then there is Chris Culliver , the cornerback was arrested last month on hit-and-run and weapons charges.
